Yesterday, I was with a first grade class making a slideshow for the months of the year. As we were typing in the names for each month, we were also brainstorming possible ideas for the “super sentences” they would be writing. We talked about how in January they could write about snowmen. February of course was all about Valentine’s Day and chocolate. When we got to March, an adorable little girl with a smile that just lights up the room said, “my birthday is in March!” “Oh that would be a great super sentence for each of you,” I said with delight, as I could see their little brains were working and thinking of great ideas to write about. As we were about to move on to April, the same little girl said, “When is your birthday?”
“My birthday. . . it’s in July”
“What is the day?”
“The 16th?” . . . I knew what was coming next . . .
“How old will you be?”
“Well, how old do you think I will be?”. . . I asked not really sure that I was ready for her answer . . .
“I think you are 50,” she said with the most adorable toothless smile!
Just then a normally quiet little boy sitting next to her blurted out . . .
“No, no, she is 17!”
Oh. . . out of the mouths of babes!
