Loss of Power

Feeling the cool breeze of the fan . . .
Brushing over me . . . ever so gently
Thankful . . . for the relief from the heat
POP . . .
The fan stops . . . all is silent . . . air is still
Feeling the coolness slowly disappear
No movement . . . air getting heavy  . . . and
WAITING . . .  WAITING . . . WAITING . . .
Beads of sweat . . . slowly dripping from my brow
Watching time pass and still nothing . . .
In the dark . . . I shower . . . savoring the cool water
And again . . .
WAITING . . .  WONDERING . . . HOPING . . .
5 hours later . . . the click of the AC . . . the hum of the fan
Ever so thankful . . . ever so appreciative . . . ever so empathetic
For all those who will be WAITING . . . not for hours but for days . . .

  1. We are so lucky! It has been in the upper 90s here and yet I know there are many people with no AC. I enjoyed how you called out some words with the larger text (POP! they did).

  2. Yuck...I have had this experience in the midst of the summer heat, too. The way you wrote this expresses it exactly. It is a good reminder to be thankful for our daily blessings small and big.
    Thanks.

  3. How great that you described the experience so perfectly, and made the writing completely perfect by adding the sincere wish for others who are feeling the same, but without quick relief. Very nice.

  4. Love all the fonts and your way with words. So glad we were only out of power for an hour -and we weren't home. I drove through Winfield - they will be without for days. Don't know how they will deal with the heat!

  5. I've been thinking about those without power for days, as well. We were out for about 12 hours and that was way too much. I can't imagine days.

I like the way you captured this slice with short phrases and changes in fonts.

  6. You described the perfect arc of the experience....calm, then shock, then impatience and then relief. I am glad that the power is back, it seems as though so many are still without.

  7. Being without power for any length of time can be difficult (ours was 14 days in the midst of winter - thank goodness for a generator). Your description and usage of different fonts really makes your slice POP! I pray that power will be restored quickly to those who are still without.
