“A sure way to lift oneself up is by helping to lift someone else.” -Booker T. Washington
I L.O.V.E. the above quote, which was on the SOL site on day 12. I can really connect to the words because it happens to me each day when I go visit my aunt in the nursing home. When we moved out here my cousins brought my aunt and found a wonderful place for her to live near our home. We have become very close to some of the ladies that live their as well. Each time I go, I make sure to spend time visiting with the ladies who have become like family. They love it when I ask for restaurant suggestions, ask about their families, or just sit together outside in the courtyard admiring the mountains. It brightens their day and mine! Although it saddens me to see my aunt failing a bit, when I can get her to laugh and act silly it just warms my heart up!

I agree, focusing on others takes away our struggles and gives us a different perspective. You are a ray of sunshine!
ReplyDeleteWe go to visit my husband's grandma sometimes, she is 94 and beginning to fail. But we know that when we go, we do lift her spirits and she lifts ours. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThose who live in nursing homes and assisted living crave the attention, the laughter, the communication, the hugs, the smiles. It makes their days brighter just because you have noticed them, which gives you a warm feeling too. .A great way to spend part of your day.
ReplyDeleteIt is so great that you are able to have your aunt near. It is the people around who bring joy into our days. How great that you are also bringing joy to others at the home.
ReplyDeleteMy parents (in their 80's) just moved to a "retirement community" It truly has helped me put things in perspective in my world and realize just how blessed I am. I love how you connected with the quote and gave us some insight on what it meant to you.
